What one word means when you count WPM

Words per minute sounds like a count of words, but a WPM test is really a count of characters in disguise. Every five characters you type, spaces and punctuation included, make one word. Typing extraordinary and the space after it earns almost three words; typing a cat with its two spaces earns a little over one.

The convention exists to keep scores fair. Counted by real words, a passage of short words would flatter anyone and a technical passage would drag anyone down. Fixing the word at five characters means a minute of your typing is measured on the same scale whatever text you happened to get. Researchers use the same definition: Dhakal and colleagues, in a 2018 study of 168,000 online volunteers, counted one word as any five characters.

Working out a score by hand

Say you type for one minute and produce 275 characters, and three of them are still wrong when time runs out. Divide the characters by five and you have 55 words, so your gross speed is 55 WPM. Gross speed is raw output: it counts everything you typed, right or wrong.

Net speed accounts for the mistakes you left behind. Each uncorrected error removes one whole word from the count before it is divided by the time, so 55 minus 3 gives 52 net WPM. A mistake you fix with backspace costs only the seconds spent fixing it.

The length of the run changes how much an error costs. In a 30-second test those same three errors would take 6 WPM off, because the word count is divided by half a minute; in a two-minute test they would take off 1.5. Short runs are harsher on mistakes, which is worth remembering before you compare scores from different lengths.

Gross speed, net speed and accuracy answer different questions

Gross WPM tells you how fast your fingers moved. Net WPM tells you how much usable text came out. Accuracy tells you how often a key you pressed was the right one: correct keystrokes divided by all keystrokes, so 190 right out of 200 presses reads 95%.

Accuracy can sit well below what your net speed suggests. Make ten mistakes and fix every one, and net WPM ignores them, since nothing wrong remains, but accuracy still records each wrong press. A high net speed with low accuracy means much of your time goes to backspace, and that habit puts a ceiling on how fast you can get.

After the run you also get a consistency figure and a per-second speed graph. Consistency reads 100 when every second was equally fast. A jagged graph usually points to a handful of words or letter pairs that stop you, and those are worth drilling.

How a character is counted outside English

Our engine counts grapheme clusters, meaning what a reader sees as a single character, rather than the code points a computer stores. For English the two are identical. In Devanagari they are not: the conjunct क्ष is stored as three code points but reads as one letter, and we count it once. Five clusters still make a word, so the definition of a word stays the same whichever script you type in.

Raising your WPM without chasing it

Speed grows out of accuracy more than out of effort. In the same 2018 study, participants who made fewer mistakes were generally the faster ones, and fast typists often pressed the next key before releasing the last, a habit the authors call rollover. Neither comes from pushing harder; both come from knowing where every key is without looking.

So slow down until you can finish a run at 97% accuracy or better, then let the speed come back on its own. Keep an even rhythm rather than typing in bursts, and keep your eyes a word or two ahead of the caret so your fingers never wait for you to read. Thirty seconds suits trying out a change in technique, one minute gives a fair everyday number, and two minutes shows whether your pace holds once the first rush of attention fades.

How is WPM calculated?
Count the characters you typed, spaces included, divide by five to get words, then divide by the minutes you typed. That is gross WPM. For net WPM, subtract one word for each error still in the text at the end before dividing by the time. 275 characters in one minute with three errors left in is 55 gross and 52 net.
What is a good WPM?
There is no single cutoff. Dhakal and colleagues measured an average of about 52 WPM across 168,000 online volunteers in a study published in 2018, with a wide spread and the fastest at 120 WPM or more. Those were people who chose to take a typing test, so treat the figure as a rough reference and compare yourself mainly with your own last result.
Why is my net WPM lower than my gross WPM?
The gap is your uncorrected errors. Each one takes a word off the count before it is divided by the time, so in a one-minute test every error you leave costs 1 WPM, and in a 30-second test it costs 2. Fix slips as you go, or better, make fewer, and the two numbers move together.
Does using backspace lower my WPM?
Not directly. A corrected error leaves nothing wrong in the text, so net WPM does not subtract it. It does cost the seconds spent deleting and retyping, and your accuracy still records the wrong keypress. Backspace is allowed on this test because correcting a mistake is part of how people really type.
Why count five characters as one word?
Real words vary too much in length to be a fair unit. Treating every five characters as a word, the space included, puts a minute of long technical words and a minute of short everyday ones on the same scale. It is the standard definition in text-entry research, and it is the one this test uses.
