Switching between the letter rows and the number row
Most typing is letters, and so is most practice. Real text is less tidy: an order confirmation, a shipping label or a spreadsheet row asks you to jump from a word to a code and back several times a line. Neither kind of key is the hard part on its own. The switch is, and that switch is what an alphanumeric typing test measures.
Each switch sends a finger two rows up, and it has to come home again before the next letter. If the return is sloppy, the first letter after a code lands one key off. Treat the return as part of the digit: reach, press, settle back on the home key, and only then move on.
Codes give you nothing to predict
Order references, serial numbers, account codes and postcodes look a little like words but behave like numbers. A code such as RD7702 or 318-5409 has no pronunciation and no meaning, and your fingers have never typed it before, so you can't complete it in your head the way you finish a familiar word. Case can matter too: a lowercase b in a code is not the same as a capital B.
That changes how you should read. With prose, you take in a word and let your hands produce it. With a code, split it into chunks of three or four characters, hold one chunk, type it, then look back for the next. Many codes are already printed in groups split by a hyphen or a space, and reading in chunks stops your eyes from losing their place halfway through.
Why one wrong digit is worse than a typo
A misspelled word in an email is a small embarrassment, and the reader still understands you. A wrong character in a code is a different kind of mistake. The order goes to the wrong account, the serial matches someone else's device, or a parcel is routed to the wrong town, and nothing about the result looks wrong until it arrives.

Speed on mixed text comes from fewer pauses at the switches, not from rushing the characters.
Verifying as you go
Glance back at each code the moment you finish it, before starting the next word. Catching a slip while the caret is still beside it takes one or two backspaces; finding it three words later means deleting good text to reach it. That is why backspace is allowed here.
With practice the check becomes a quick comparison between the chunk on screen and the chunk you remember, and it costs almost nothing. The one-minute run is the place to build that habit. The three- and five-minute runs show whether it survives once your attention starts to wander.
